Program Note

Inner Worlds explores the incredible ability of the human mind to conjure up vivid imagined spaces and environments. When reality begins to feel too overwhelming or unsafe, people often retreat into their minds, relying on acts of the imagination to provide solace and comfort. The creation of music, art, stories, as well as dreaming and fantasizing, are all ways one might withdraw from reality into a world of their own making.

Imagination then turns into a means of protection: A safe space where you have complete control over your surroundings. It becomes a way to guard your own mental wellbeing and create spaces where you can feel free from fear, reclaiming a sense of agency along the way, especially for children and teenagers who often have very little control over their environments and home life.

Inner Worlds unfolds slowly, beginning in an introspective state of despair before abruptly shifting into a dream-like sequence. The music takes the listener on a journey through an imagined landscape, cautiously navigating and exploring their surroundings all the while. Repeated patterns are frequent, a through line that hints towards the strong pull of escapism. The piece ends having finally reached a serene sense of stillness, and a feeling of safety.

Hidden beneath the larger themes of creativity and imagined worlds, this piece touches upon imagination as a coping mechanism in the face of trauma: Not merely a desire to create, but a need to foster a safe space that can’t always be found in the real world.
